Option Three: Illustrations
Illustrators are one of the biggest growing and strongest Art Design Occupations for the future!
Yes, it's true, everything from Graphic Novels, Set Designers, Poster and Marketing Artists and most importantly: Novel cover illustrators and concept illustrators for TV and Films.
Illustration can be anything from a graphic novel, comic strip, illustrating characters from your favorite novel (not film or TV) and/or sections of your favorite part of a story. It could also be taking poems or music prose and making illustrations in combination or on their own. NO FILM OR TV - IF IT'S BEEN DONE, IT'S NOT ORIGINAL.
CREATE - An illustration of your ORIGINAL theme showing at least 3 sketchbook pages. CREATE 3 pieces, no SMALLER than sketchbook size 11 x 8.5 inches that illustrate your understanding of illustration. Your work will show your exploration, discovery and understanding of this form as translated by you using the design strategies and composition.

Step One1. Decide which project you will choose - commit! STICK TO IT. NO CHANGING your MIND! View the images below, check out the link - Illustrators below, it's amazing!
|
Step Two2. Project Mind Map/Brainstorming - Draw out 3 different possible narrative using the ideas listed above but from your own ideas. EG. Do you have a favourite musician, book, or your own comic idea? Stick to a theme and/or question. Plot and theme are critical to this project. Think about purpose, PLOT means a beginning, middle and end. Theme means purpose, eg. music and poetry - what do you want your viewer to feel, think or understand? (this is VERY IMPORTANT) Write this down and brainstorm around it!
|
Step Three3. YOU NEED THREE ROUGH DRAFTS - eg. front, back and side. PLEASE USE NOTATIONS IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK WORK. DUE March 16 or 17, depending on block rotation.
MOST IMPORTANT! MAKE SURE YOU USE DESIGN STRATEGIES AND CONSIDER THE COMPOSITION! There must be serious consideration to the context of your images. Remember Magnification and Cropping are design strategies that work well for this. |
Step Four4. Medium Study - VERY IMPORTANT! You have to decide what medium to do this project. The best mediums for illustration are felt pen, ink, pencil, pencil crayon, watercolour (probably most popular for illustrators) acrylic paint. AFTER SPRING BREAK.
|
Step Five5. PRODUCTION TIME - CREATING AND STUDIO TIME TO BUILD YOUR PROJECTS. This should begin by April 16th.
|
Step 66. Artist Statement.
